Hugh Smith made his professional debut in Madama Butterfly at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples in 1996. He has been heralded at the great opera houses of Europe as well as the important opera houses and concert halls of the United States. Hugh Smith has sung with the Metropolitan in the Parks, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Cincinnatti, Miami, and San Diego Operas as well as with the opera houses of Paris, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Geneva, Tokyo, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Bologna and Lyon.

Most recent engagements include role debuts in La Forza del Destino and La Gioconda with New Israeli Opera, the Israeli Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta as Don Carlos, Lohengrin and Ein Florentinische Tragödie with Opera Lyon, I Pagliacci with Opera Nancy, Norma with Netherlands Opera, Mazeppa with Welsh National Opera, La Fanciulla del West with the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, La Forza del Destino in Brussels,  Aida and Ernani in Tel Aviv and Jenufa in Marseilles.

In Europe, he has appeared with the Opera de Paris in Don Carlos, Theatre du Chatelet in Arabella, Les Troyens and Lelio, Bayerische Staatsoper in Manon Lescaut, Teatro San Carlo in Madama Butterfly, Teatro Communale di Bologna in Attila, Geneva and Berlin Staatsoper in Norma, with the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Un Ballo in Maschera and with the Orchestre de Paris as Benvenuto Cellini, the BBC Philharmonic in the Verdi Requiem, the Concertgebouw for Bruckner's Te Deum and Manon Lescaut and Mahler's Symphony No. 8 and Dvorak's Stabat Mater in the Grand Canary Islands. On the U.S concert stage he has sung with the Collegiate Chorale at Carnegie Hall in Nabucco and Giovanna d'Arco, at Avery Fisher Hall with the American Symphony Orchestra in Die Liebe der Danae and Le Roi Arthur as well as guest appearances with the St. Louis, Puerto Rico and Pacific Symphonies and the Dayton and Fort Wayne Philharmonics.


Smith holds a Masters in Music from Bowling Green State University, Ohio and continued his studies at the Academy of Vocal Arts, Philadelphia.

Hugh is headed to the Metropolitan Opera as Principal Cover in Tosca, Carmen and Stiffelio this season. He will be working with great conductors, James Levine and Placido Domingo, as well as top singers. His MET contract should afford opportunities to appear in principal roles now and in the future.

Hugh has appeared with the Compton Heights Concert Band of St. Louis every year since 1997. This website is hosted by the Compton Heights Concert Band.
