The Compton Heights Concert Band is a community band whose mission is the preservation of the community through cultural life, musical education for membership and the preservation of old fashioned Sousa-style band concerts which are so much a part of history. Band members and the public enjoy a wide variety of music, accessible to all. The Band has performed with national and internationally recognized artists, such as William Warfield, Nicole Cabell (2005 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World), David Morris (World Champion Whistler), Ricardo Morales, Buckwheat Zydeco, The Lennon Brothers, Sukay (Music of the Andes), Debbye Turner, Beverly Stewart Anderson, Robert Ellison, The Legend Singers, Circus Flora, James Christensen (Walt Disney World Music), Arturo Sandoval, Hugh Smith, Doc Severinsen, and Peter Nero.
The Band has a wide variety of activities, including weekly bingo fundraising, international tours for constituent members, recordings of annual Holiday concerts, in addition to performing throughout the year. The Band presented 14 months of weekly TV shows on local CBS affiliate KMOV. The Band has hosted the National Association of Concert Bands convention, toured to outstate Missouri, Illinois and Nebraska, and has had many fundraising activities, including fruit sales, flee markets, bingo, auctions, raffles, grants, sponsors, advertising, and tours.
A grass-roots organization, the band has mainly provided the St. Louis community with free concerts every year for 27 years.
