Hung Gar Kuen Kung Foo Studio

Wayne Judge, a martial arts instructor with over 18 years martial arts experience, has opened a teaching studio at 6313 Clayton, near Graham. Mr. Judge will teach authentic, classical Chinese Kung Fu, including Classical weapons, and how to defend against weapons. The studio will offer instruction in Cantonese Hung Gar, Ha Say Fu Hung Gar, Iron Palm training, Hard Qigong, and Eight Drunken Immortals Boxing. The classes are based upon a system developed between 1779 and 1800. Mr. Judge, who goes by the name of Jia Wei in his studio, issues no belts. Instead the student progresses only when the set is learned. There is a flat monthly fee for classes, and discounts will be offered to community members. Call 645-5333 if you are interested. Moo Goo Gai Pan, Kung Pao Chicken and Egg Foo Young are available at the Chinese Express restaurant on 1230 Hampton or at the China Wok Express on 6544 Manchester.

CTCA Meeting is cancelled for the month of July. Please join us again in August.

A Sign of These Nostalgic Times

The Dogtown Historical Society continues its plan to restore the sign in the alley between the Dogtown Frame shop and Seamus McDaniels. Companies have made bids on the job; now the Historical Society is working on funding. Also, the DHS is working on plans to engrave the names of noteable Dogtown residents on bricks, and have the bricks set into the sidewalk. Locations for this project, and the individuals to be honored, have not been decided. Details about DogtownÕs past can be researched on the History of Dogtown web page: www.webster.edu/~corbetre/dogtown/dogtown.html

Dogtown Artists Commended

On June 14th, Tom Bauer and the Board of Aldermen passed a resolution commending the twenty one artists in the Dogtown Dog Project for their artistic contribution to the community. The Dog Project included twenty four pieces of art on the subject of dogs and also involved seventeen Clayton-Tamm merchantÕs storefronts. The Dog Project included Dogtonian artists Pat Rutherford, Arne Thorbjornson, the Kids in the Safari Room at the Developmental Child Care Center, Wendy Werner, Porter Arneill, the Art Club of St. James School, Paul E. Jost, Dennis Taylor, Kim DiNovi, Joe Neaf, and the Dog Project organizer Joe Staebell. (JAN)

Orphan Project Anyone?

A "Champion Spark Plug" sign goes neglected on the side of the McNeal Lumber building.

It Takes a Village to Raise a House

The Saaman Development Company will build a row of new homes on the northeast corner of Prather and Garner. They have named it Dogtown Village. Dogtown Village will have five new 'townhouses,' in the sense they will be tall and skinny, although they will be seperate buildings and not have shared walls, says Carol Burns, a Saaman representative. The all-new construction will include three bedrooms, 2.5 baths and a basement 2-car garage for "under $199,000." Saaman's ad in the CWE Word newspaper mentioned no address, purposefully to generate interest, but included a picture of Lehman's Hardware store which led to untrue rumors describing house demolitions on the 6400 block of Wise. Community Garden News By Elizabeth Vogel

On Friday, June 22nd, three large, air-conditioned buses pulled up in front of our beautiful community garden. Approximately 150 people, viewing 5 gardens selected for the Gateway Greening tour, stopped at our slice of heaven. As we were the last on the tour, the next stop was the Missouri Botanical Gardens. What gardens won what award, was still to be announced during the award presentations and a delicious boxed lunch. Contestants were given awards for various categories. Dogtown's garden was judged in the "established vegetable garden" category. Approximately 80 of the 140 gardens supported by Gateway Greening were entered. The different community gardens and plots are located in the city and county, as far north as Jennings, and now includes East St. Louis. Imagine our delight when three awards were given to our garden and its caregivers. Jerry Vogel was awarded an "individual recognition" for all of the manual labor he has done to take a vision and make it real. Christine Duden, a first year participant of our garden, won "individual best bed" award for her beautifully planned "quilt-like" square foot gardening plot, and to our pure delight and gratefulness, the Dogtown Garden placed FIRST in our category. Next time you're near Tamm and Manchester, take a moment to walk the garden. You will fill your spirit, refresh your mind, and revitalize your energy!!!

Dog Grooming & Rosies' Pub Buildings Sold

Lisa and Tom O'Brien, the proprietors of Dog Towne Dog Grooming, became the new owners of 1136-38 Tamm on June 14th. The property includes their dog grooming business and the former Rosie's Pub. On June 11th, Dennis James, of Gladstone's in Soulard, acquired the $300 liquor license application at 1136 Tamm based on a multi-year lease which Brent Soloman negotiated in 2001 with Clarence "Mickey" Huntebrinker, the former owner. James was unaware of the ownership change until he was contacted by this publication on July 8th for an update on his application. O'Brien says they notified Soloman the day after they closed on the property. Brent is the brother of Nikki Soloman, the failed applicant for a liquor license at 1136 Tamm. Soloman was unavailable for comment. James' notification postcard proposes liquor by the drink and dancing. Though neighbors question any available space for dancing, James says he was informed by the Excise Department he would violate the liquor license should anyone leap from their chair and dance to the music in the bar if he didn't have a supplemental $100 dance hall license. In addition, a protest against the new license was formally initiated with the Excise Department and is being led by Gary Nicely and the property owners and residents living on Tamm Avenue.
