• Community Development Coordinator: Hired Mary Thurman for the position of Community Development Coordinator. This position was funded under a 3-year operating grant from the Regional Housing and Community Development Alliance. Mary's duties include neighborhood planning and organizing, community relations, and marketing.

• Compton Hill Apartments: Carried out over $400,000 in capital improvements on DeSales' 130-unit, market rate apartment group. Improvements included interior and exterior upgrades, property signs, landscaping, and more extensive improvements on selected buildings. DeSales was nominated by the St. Louis office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the 1999 HUD Best Practices Award for the assemblage and creation of the Compton Hill Apartments.

• Compton Hill 2000: Acquired properties for a 16-unit Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit project. This project will rehab 7 vacant buildings in the Compton Hill Historic District as market-rate apartments. Pre-development funding of $100,000 was secured from the St. Louis Equity Fund.

• DeSales MHA 2000: Secured $150,000 in pre-development financing from the St. Louis Equity Fund and the Regional Housing and Community Development Alliance for this 23- unit Low Income Housing Tax Credit development. Acquired 9 vacant buildings in Fox Park and Tower Grove East for this project and submitted the tax credit application to the Missouri Housing Development Comission.

• California Avenue Redevelopment: Coordinated demoliton of two vacant commercial properties at the corners of California at Ann and California at Accomac in Fox Park for development as landscaped green space in 2000. Arranged demolition funding through the Neighborhood Stabilization Office from a Department of Justice crime prevention grant. Secured funding commitment for landscaping from Alderwoman Phyllis Young.

• Neighborhood Planning: Assisted the Tower Grove East Neighborhood Association in conducting a comprehensive property condition survey using DeSales' Geographic Information System. Helped the Fox Park Neighborhood Association apply for 501(c)3 status with the IRS and coordinated a property survey to expand the neighborhood historic district.

• Special Events: Co-Sponsored Festival of Nations 1999, a multi-ethnic street festival on South Grand in July. In October, participated with Neighborhood Housing Services of St. Louis in its annual BlockAid neighborhood spruce-up event; DeSales board members and staff cleaned up and painted a vacant building at 3500 Utah.
