A Sweetheart of a BallWhat did you and your sweetheart do for Valentine's Day this year? If you weren't at the 1994 Rosebud Ball, you missed out on some ragged romance! This year's Rosebud Ball was even larger than last year's - more people, more music, more dancing. The stars were shining brightly that night, especially on board the Goldenrod Showboat. John Hancock, performer and composer, presided as the emcee, dazzling the crowd with his rags throughout the evening. Warm-up artists included Barry Morgan and Rich Egan, who played the music ofBrun Campbell and Trebor Tichenor; Rich even played two of his own rags! Three acts were featured this year: the Joplinesque J. Hamilton Douglas, the world-famous St. Louis Ragtimers, and the hottest new thing in ragtime, Reginald Robinson (see Reginald's CD review on p. 5). This musically intoxicating night also featured ragtime dance lessons. We learned one-steps, two-steps and cakewalks. After the dance instruction, the St. Louis Ragtimers played Swipsey 's Cakewalk for an authentic Cake Walk Contest. The Ist place team took the cake! All others won consolation cupcakes for their high-kicking efforts. All in all, the 1994 Rosebud Ball was a huge success - a good time was had by all! |
