Ragtime Rendezvous Report

On a drizzly Sunday evening, the 2nd of November, the patrons in the cozy upstairs room at Dressel's pub were warmed by the syncopated strains of the first monthly Ragtime Rendezvous held by The Friends of Scott Joplin. Barry Morgan started the evening appropriately with Maple Leaf Rag played in a Jelly Roll Morton style. He continued with Brun Campbell's Ginger Snap Rag, Charles L. Johnson's All the Money, Buddy Bolden 's Blues, Mabel's Dream, his own Basin Street Irregular,Trebor Tichenor's T.S. Eliot Society Rag, Campbell's Barber Shop Rag, Tom Shea's Spasm Rag, Johnson's delightful Indian Intermezzo, Iola, and concluded his set with a bang with Trebor's Goldenrod Stomp.

Trebor Tichenor and Al Stricker took over the entertainment playing Johnson's Dill Pickles Rag, Tom Turpin's Harlem Rag, and Joplin's elite Pineapple Rag. Joining them was Don Franz on baritone sax to play Canal Streef Blues, He'd Have To Get Under to Fix Up His Automobile, and James Scott's Calliope Rag. Richard Egan then performed Campbell's Chestnut Street in the 90s, his own The Gift, Swipesy Cakewalk, and Trebor's Ghosts of the Missouri Backroads.

Gale Foehner performed his own Cat's Cradle Rag, the Sublime Blues, and EK Rag. He was followed by Steve Hinson, who played his own Joplin House Rag, a Mississippi John Hurt medley, Sunflower Slow Drag, and a Ragtime Happy Birthday. Trebor, Al, and Don returned with a set featuring At A Georgia Camp Meeting, Car Barlick Acid, Glad Rag (a rarity by Ribe Danmark, the pen name for J. Bodewalt Lampe), Smoky Mokes, I've Been Floating Down the Old Green River, The Easy Winners, and Beedle Um Bum. Rich returned with Tickled to Death and Blue Rag, and Steve closed out the three hour session with an old St. Louis Medley, Weeping Willow, and Maple Leaf Rag (switching to harpsichord) .

The Ragtime Rendezvous is to be held the first Sunday of each month from 5:30 until 8:30 at Dressel's Pub, 419 North Euclid Avenue. All musicians with a little ragtime in their blood are invited to perform. The greater variety, the more successful the program should become. All others are invited to listen. Based on the first meeting, the future promises much. Don't miss out.
