Annual Ragtime Piano Competition History of Friends of Scott Joplin: Our previous accomplishments Scott Joplin Ragtime History Links |
The Friends of Scott Joplin in 1998 and 1999 raised the money for buying a tombstone for St. Louis ragtime genius and entrepreneur, Tom Turpin, who was buried in St. Peters Cemetery. You can read about this piece of recent history in our archives: "Tom Turpin Monument Dedication Ceremony." In August 2007 Almetta "Cookie" Jordan, an employee of the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site, searched for and found the probable location of the grave of famed and colorful ragtime composer, Louis Chauvin in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis. According to site director, Vikki Love, "I pleased to say that we are as sure as we can be that Louis Chauvin is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri." Jordan, Love and Friends of Scott Joplin vice president Steve Hinson have visited the site to identify the location of the burial. Scott Joplin honored Louis Chauvin by writing the rag Heliotrope Bouquet based on Chauvin's themes. Won't you join with the Friends of Scott Joplin in raising an appropriate tombstone above the head of this famous ragtime figure. Costs for even a modest marker have risen over what they were just ten years ago when the marker for Tom Turpin was placed in St. Peters. Please send your donations to The Friends of Scott Joplin |
