Photographing the Scott Joplin House: Overview, Panoramas
Return to Menu | Previous | Next

For our two field trips to the Scott Joplin House, we divided up into teams of students, one team each for digital photography, digital video, audio files, and quicktime panoramas. Some students were on two teams, because they had an interest in developing their skill level in two categories.

On our first trip, we "scoped out" the site and made concrete plans for our return. We sketched out the floor plan (see below), which we used to estimate what resources and materials we would need, and formulate a plan of action. We found out that the first floor had been made into a museum and recital space, while the second floor was a partial reconstruction of the way the Joplin House looked when Scott Joplin stayed there.

On our second visit to the Scott Joplin House, we did our shoot and also interviewed Mr. Jan Douglas.

One of the most interesting jobs was to shoot several Quicktime Panoramic views of various rooms in the Scott Joplin House. We had a special camera which takes pictures ever 22.5 degrees (16 shots in total). Special software "sews" these 16 separate shots together into a panorama that can be published and viewed on the world wide web.

You can view these panoramas at the student website at SIUE, but remember to return to this website when you finish.
