St. Louis Landmarks
& Historic Districts
is a guidebook to sites, buildings and districts officially designated
by the City of St. Louis or the National Register of Historic Places.
This expanded edition by Carolyn Hewes Toft and Lynn Josse is lavishly illustrated with historic and recent photos including twelve full-color, full-page images introducing each chapter. Designed for armchair, auto or pedestrian touring, the book features a special open-flat binding.
We are indebted to dozens of photographers, especially Landmarks' member Gary Tetley who first opened his archives and then rushed out to capture last-minute images in April of 2002. Somehow, Paradowski Graphic Design managed to pull it all together as the magnitude of the project escalated far beyond expectation. Special thanks are due to talented lead designer Joy Marcus for her extraordinary dedication. Gratitude is also owed Bill Seibert who read the manuscript in 2001 contributing many insights. John Knoll and Pat Smith caught egregious typos just before publication.
Financial assistance came from lead gifts by the Meade Summers, Jr. Foundation and the Regional Arts Commission. Subsequent sponsors include Jamie and Mary Jo Cannon, Tony and Melanie Fathman, Gary and Gloria Sextro, Dr. Donald M. Suggs, Bill and Gina Wischmeyer, Heartland Bank, McCormack Baron & Associates, Commerce Bancshares Foundation, the Donald and Ruth V. Malvern Foundation and Community Program Development Corporation.
