Carr School 1421 Carr Street The value of the school building as a symbol of quality education and community culture was widely understood during the tenures of architects William B. lttner and Rockwell M. Milligan whose designs for the St. Louis Board of Education spanned the years from 1897 to 1929. Carr school, designed by lttner in 1908, was one of the brightest stars in the constellation known throughout the country. |

"Visiting architects and casual sightseers alike ask to
be shown Carr School sits at the eastern edge of Carr Square Village - a low-rise public housing project built in 1942 for black families. (Clinton-Peabody adjacent to Lafayette Square opened for whites that same year.) The future for the neighborhood-scale school building may lie with the success of a $20 million project that got underway in late 1994. Designed to transform Carr Square with both rehab and new units, the housing project has been under discussion for at least a decade. Loretta Hall, resident manager at Carr Square, has also spent years trying to find funding to convert the historic school into an elderly project for seniors who want to remain in their familiar neighborhood. |
