St. Liborius Complex 1835 North 18th Named for the patron saint of a section of Westphalia, Germany, the parish of St. Liborius constructed this masterful Gothic Revival Church and Rectory in 1889- 90 from plans by William Schickel of New York City. |
| The high altar was a gift from contractors Bothe &
Ratermann, parishioners; the Convent building from 1905 for the Sisters of Notre Dame was designed by parishioner Joseph Conradi, architect and sculptor. Conradi's 1907 openwork sandstone spire for the church was removed in 1965. The boyhood parish of former Mayors John Poelker and Jim Conway, St. Liborius survived many years in a neighborhood that has seen demolition of tragic proportions. In an effort to consolidate parishes on the northside, the Archdiocese closed St. Liborius in early 1992. The statues, choir stalls, confessionals and other interior furnishings were sold at auction by Selkirk's in 1992. |
