Recreation Council St. Charles County Office has Moved to

60 GAILWOOD DR. – SUITE C ~ ST. PETERS, MO

Because the Non-Profit Development Center that housed the St. Charles County office will be demolished this spring to make way for the new library and development center, the Recreation Council office has moved to a new location.  You’ll find us at 60 Gailwood Dr. in St. Peters.  From Mexico Rd, go south on Jungermann Rd. about ½ mile.  Just past the stoplight for Boone Hills Rd. you’ll see Gailwood on the left (east) side of the road.  Turn onto Gailwood and we are in the second building on the left.  Our phone/fax, and e-mail address has not changed. 

 

Habitat for Humanity ABILITY BUILD

This summer, people with disabilities joined forces with the United Methodist Coalition to build a Habitat For Humanity house.  Construction began in early May on “The Enclaves at Eisenhower” located at Birdie Hills Rd. & Eisenhower Dr. in St. Peters. National Junior Disability Championship Games Successful

Athletes from across the country came to St. Charles from July 25 to August 1 for the 26th Annual National Junior Disability Championships hosted by the Disabled Athlete Sports Association.  About 250 athletes with disabilities ages 5-18 competed in track, field, swimming, archery, table tennis, and weight lifting at the St. Peters Rec-Plex and St. Charles West High School.  A big thanks to everyone who came out and volunteered their time to work the event.  You can visit www.dasasports.org to see more great photos.

 

 

Judevine Center for Autism is now

“TOUCHPOINT AUTISM SERVICES”

Parents of Children with Disabilities —The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) Wants To Know Your Opinion

The US Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) in Washington, DC is visiting Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Division of Special Education for a verification visit to learn how the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is working for Missouri families and their children.

 

OSEP has asked that parents take a brief survey (see links below) to share their experiences. Please participate in OSEP’s collection of data by taking the survey online. OSEP’s Part B survey may be found online at:

SHOWME AQUATICS BARRIER BREAKING DAYS

Sept 12-13, 2009

This triple header event has something for everyone.

Sunday, September 13 ~ BBQ cook-Off and Family Fun Event ~ 2:00-6:00pm

Join us for an “all-you-can-eat” barbeque and cook-off.  Vote for the best BBQ in town and enjoy the music of The Smashband while the kids participate in fun-filled activities. Advance tickets cost $20 for adults ($25 at the door) and $10 for kids age 5-12. Kids 4 and under are free.

Sunday, September 13 ~ Motorcycle and Poker Run ~ 9:00am, ride starts at 10:30am

If you love to ride, join other cycling enthusiasts for a 3-stop tour of St. Charles that includes a hand of poker along the way.  Cost is $35 for the first rider, $20 for a second rider.

This FREE educational workshop on long-term planning for loved ones with special needs is open to all family members, friends, and guardians of individuals with special needs.  The workshop will provide essential information, regardless of your financial situation, to help you develop a plan or evaluate your existing plan.  Lack of a plan or a proper plan can put loved ones at risk for losing benefits.  An expert panel will lead the workshop and address your questions and concerns.

Geoff Lanham has a BS in Leisure Service Management from University of Missouri—Columbia and has been working with people with disabilities for over 22 years. As a professional, Geoff has experience in long-term care, mental health and working with children with a variety of disabilities. He has been published in numerous magazines and developed a board game that represents the barriers children with mental health issues face. As a single parent of three children with disabilities, he understands the difficulties in raising children with special needs. He also realizes the importance of humor to deal with the stressors that life presents. Geoff has given humorous presentations across the Midwest, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Geoff truly believes that “Humor is the Best Medicine”.

 

Katie Banister ~ New Guest Speaker ~ Katie Rodriquez Banister survived an auto accident in 1990 that left her a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down. With her husband, Steve, the two co-founded Access-4-All, Inc. with a mission to educate and empower others through motivational speaking and disability education. Katie has authored the children’s book, “Aunt Katie’s Visit,” in 2003, and The Personal Care Attendant Guide, Demos Medical Publishing in 2007. Katie’s honors include 2001 St. Louis Woman of Achievement; Missouri Jaycees 1998 Ten Outstanding Young Missourians; St. Louis Jaycees Jr. Chamber of Commerce 1995 Ten Outstanding Young St. Louisans; Missouri Governor’s Council on Disability 1993 Advocate of the Year; and Kirkwood Missouri Jr. Miss in 1982. Katie is a dynamic speaker, author and consultant!

11th Annual Community Networking Forum

The Wentzville Holiday Night Lights Display

This beautiful light display is open Thursday through Sunday, now through Sunday, December 28. The display is closed on Christmas Day, December 25. Display hours are from 6:00-10:00 p.m. Admission is only $8 per car, or $1 per person for buses or vans with more than seven passengers.

 

City of O’Fallon Celebration of Lights

Augusta's Christmas Candlelight Walk

Las Posadas

A beautiful re-enactment of the Spanish tradition of Las Posadas finds Mary and Joseph looking for shelter as they process down South Main Street in historic St. Charles with thousands of visitors carrying luminaries and singing carols. Culminating in Frontier Park, there is a re-telling of the Christmas Story in narrative and song, the St. Charles Christmas tree is lit, and Christmas Carols are sung around the Yule Log bonfire.

Rec. Council Award Nominations

 

Each year, the Recreation Council presents awards to outstanding individuals in three key areas:

·         Recreation Volunteer of the Year

·         Outstanding Recreation Service Provider

·         Outstanding Recreation Program of the Year

 

Two St. Charles County Providers walked away with awards in 2009:

Kelly Behlmann of The Disabled Athlete Sports Association took Outstanding Recreation Provider of the Year and The Rocking R Ranch Volunteers of Therapeutic Horsemanship took Outstanding Volunteer Program of the Year.

 

And, we have a winning history:

2008: Todd and Natalie Blakemore win the “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year” award.

2007: The City of Lake St. Louis’ Director of Parks and Recreation, Dave Reynolds, wins the “Outstanding Recreation Program Provider of the Year” award.

2006:  Wentzville’s All of Us Club wins the “Outstanding Recreation Program of the Year” award.

Teen Club for School Year 2009-2010:  Teen Club is a Therapeutic Recreation Program where youth, ages 12-21 who are currently enrolled in middle or high school, come to relax and socialize at the end of the school day with friends.  Students receive help with homework, create art projects, enjoy cooking, outdoor activities, field trips, watch and/or participate in after school club activities, sports events and more!

 

·         Locations include Francis Howell North, Francis Howell Central, Wentzville Holt High, and Family Support Services in O’Fallon

·         Currently in session - available until end of school year in May 2010

·         Time:  Monday-Friday school dismissal until 6:00pm

·         Affordable Cost:  $4 per hour - limited scholarships available

DASA introduces cognitively age appropriate children ages 5-18 who are physically disabled, visually impaired, deaf, or hard of hearing to therapeutic sports that provide exercise, physical fitness, confidence, and teamwork.  DASA provides year-round recreational activities, competitive Paralympic-style sports, and summer camps. Sports include swimming, track and road racing, golf, martial arts, archery, sled hockey, rock climbing, stand-up soccer, and power soccer. S.A.S (Senior and Adult Services):  Senior and Adult Services (S.A.S.) is a day and evening recreation program for adults 18 & older with developmental disabilities providing a range of educational, social, and fitness opportunities. The annual fee is $10 to become a S.A.S. member to participate in many free and low-cost activities each month. This nationally accredited therapeutic riding program for people with disabilities is designed to promote horseback riding as a recreational means for people with disabilities who are working toward therapeutic goals. The repetitive motion of riding improves balance, coordination, strength and muscle tone as it gently mobilizes the joints & provides low-level cardiovascular conditioning.  There are several 12-week sessions per year.  Programs include:

Teaching Skills for Healthy, Independent Living, Project HEART provides FREE stimulating, person-centered education classes, skills training and resource information to people 16 years and older with developmental disabilities in St. Charles County. Adapted Cycles

The Council maintains various cycles including handcycles, a tandum bike, three-wheeled cycles, & the Duet.  Individuals with disabilities can use these on the Forest Park bike trail by calling the Recreation Council at 314-726-6044.  A Duet and a handcrank cycle are available at Katy Trail Rentals, 2998 Hwy 94 South in Defiance, MO. Call 1-636-987-2673 to arrange use of those bikes on the Katy Trail.

 

Accessible Golf Carts – NEW ST. CHARLES LOCATION

These carts are designed for golfers with physical disabilities to access ALL areas of the golf course. A swivel seat allows you to golf directly from the cart, then drive onto the greens to putt that birdie. They are available for use at Eagle Springs in north St. Louis County, and now at St. Peters Golf and Recreation on Highway 79 (Salt Lick Rd)  just south of I-70.  Call 314-726-6044 for more information

The Recreation Council is pleased to announce the availability of two new pieces of adaptive recreation equipment:  The Roleez Platform Dolly:  Roll your wheelchair right up on the Platform Dolly while someone pushes you through a variety of terrains with ease.  Suitcase 5 ft. Ramp: The ramp can be used by participants who use ambulatory devices and need a ramp to navigate steps.  The ramp collapses into to a 5 foot-1 inch suitcase with handle for easy portability.

Recreation Support Voucher Program – General Information

Through a grant from the Developmental Disabilities Resource Board of St. Charles County, DDRB, the Recreation Council, St. Charles office is able to offer voucher funding for recreation programs.  If you need financial assistance to attend a community recreational program or summer camp, download the application from our website, or call the office and request a paper copy.  Voucher recipients must have a developmental disability, live in St. Charles, and select a voucher eligible program.  See the guideline section of the application for details.

 

FY 2010 Recreation Support Vouchers –July1, 2009 to June 30, 2010

Due to overwhelming demand, voucher money for FY 2010 is fully allocated. This money funds programs that occur between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010.  Requests are being accepted for a waiting list in case money becomes available.  Applications for fiscal year 2011 will be available in March 2010.

Services Provided by the Recreation Council...

The Recreation Council is a clearinghouse of recreation and leisure information for individuals with disabilities.  We provide information & referral services, do community presentations & trainings, publish a quarterly newsletter, have a recreation resource center, run a voucher program to help with fees for overnight camps and ongoing community recreation, have cooperative agreements with local parks and recreation departments for inclusion services, and support the of “All of Us” after school clubs in Wentzville and Francis Howell schools.

 

The Recreation Council is not responsible for the claims made or services delivered by the programs or organizations listed in this newsletter.  It is strongly recommended that you research the quality of a program prior to attending, and that you give as much information as possible about the participant when enrolling in a program.
