Program Philosophy Preparing for ACTION in our neighborhoods!
SLACO is committed to the principle that neighborhood residents should take the lead role in determining the future of their neighborhoods. Good neighborhoods and healthy communities don’t just happen on their own - they take hard work and commitment.

SLACO’s Neighborhood Leadership Academy is designed to assist neighborhood leaders who wish to exchange ideas and proven community-building techniques. With the knowledge of effective practices, our leaders can build upon the wealth of knowledge and experience within our neighborhoods to preserve what is good about our neighborhoods and to create healthy, safe, and sustainable communities.

What will we learn? What will we learn?
This training program is put together for you, and in part by you. From the beginning you will be asked what you want to learn to be better able to make a difference in your neighborhood. The facilitators will tailor the sessions according to your input. Prior groups have put together the following series:
  • Session I: Your Leadership Abilities
Learn about how to effectively carry out such neighborhood leadership responsibilities as meeting facilitation, recruitment and outreach, dealing with public officials, and more.
  • Session II: Making Your Group Stronger
Focus on how to strengthen your group as a neighborhood institution so that your neighbors will always have a forum to meet and act together.
  • Session III: Effective Collaborations
You already know how to build a solid group with effective leaders, it’s time to figure out how to put that strength to work with others. Learn about bringing such entities as city government, neighborhood churches and economic institutions to partner with you in neighborhood improvement projects.

How much time? How much time?
Prior groups found that three sessions of 2 to 3 hours works out well. Each session is given twice, once on a Saturday morning and once on a weeknight, so that there is a time convenient for all participants.
