"Making A Difference...
One Child At a Time"

The Make A Difference Center is based on a model initially developed by NationsBank. The St. Louis Association of Community Organizations (SLACO) operates this Make a Difference Center for the communities at Etzel Place Apartments. Our programs serve low-to-moderate income families. They are a means to create a greater sense of community, to provide a safe place for children/youth to attend after school, and to enhance the living environment for all residents. The program's office hours are Monday - Friday from 10am - 6pm. The After School Program hours are from 3pm - 6pm.

For more information, contact LaChrisa Crenshaw, Program Director, at 361-1446.

After School Program

Our After School Program offers tutorial services in Math, Reading, English, Science, and Social Studies to children grades K - 12. This program assists participants with homework, and provides exposure to arts and culture. Children learn to express themselves through positive creative means such as poetry, dance, music appreciation, story telling, etc. We provide positive discussions about different cultures, workshops on basic life skills, and arts and crafts activities.

The philosophy of the program is taken from the seven principles of Kwanzaa. These principles are used to promote academic success in our participants' future endeavors. Children will have access to a computer lab with 25 computers with internet access.

Summer Peace Camp

Since the summer of 1999, the Make a Difference Center Summer Peace Camp regularaly draws more than 50 children for a variety of recreational, community service and academic enrichment activities. Camp counselors are recruited from SLATE (St. Louis Agency on Training & Employment).
