Future Project

In response to chronic insufficiency and fragmentation of health and mental health services for children in the south side of the city of St. Louis, a group of experienced providers representing multiple disciplines has come together to build and operate the Center for Comprehensive Pediatric Care (CCPC). This effort has been requested by community residents (it is a part of the South City Sustainable Neighborhood Community Plan) and endorsed by the Sustainable Neighborhood leadership team (SNLT) composed of residents from the Benton Park West, Fox Park, Gravois Park and McKinley Heights neighborhoods, who would assist in forming an ongoing center advisory group. The Center will be owned by SSDN. Pediatric and dental services will be provided through a joint venture with Health Care for Kids/Dental Care for Kids (HCFK/DCFK) directed by Blaine Sayre, M.D. MPH; with mental health services organized and directed by John N. Constantino, M.D. Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Washington University School of Medicine. Donald Huebener, D.D.S., Director of Pediatric Dentistry St. Louis Children's Hospital will advise and support the Pediatric dentistry program and Patricia Wolff, M.D., Pediatrician and Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Washington University will serve on the CCPC Advisory Committee.

Health Care for Kids began in 1992 as a joint collaboration between St. Louis Children's Hospital and Cardinal Glennon Hospital. It is now a self-funded program that has become a model for innovative managed care. In 2001, Health Care for Kids launched Dental Care for Kids. Health Care for Kids will expand its successful program model and will provide the medical and dental services at the Center. Approximately 2000 of its current patients live in the south side of the city.

In 2004, Health Care for Kids' medical director, Dr. Blaine Sayre was selected as Local Hero in Community Pediatrics by the American Academy of Pediatrics. He donated the award's honorarium to the capital campaign for the Center for Comprehensive Pediatric Care.
