Projects entered in this division are those involving bench and machine operations
in metalworking. Each project must be accompanied by a set of working drawings
except where noted. Guns, knives, or crossbows are not eligible for the State
Contest.
BM-1 BENCH METALS
This classification includes any metal object whose primary construction is
of bar, rod, or structural shape or pre-cast metal and involving operations
normally done with basic machines such as a saw, drill press, grinder, forge
or welder. Examples: (jack stand, metal furniture, or shelf bracket.) Maximum
size to fit in area 3'x3'x3' assembled
Awards in Groups A, B, C, D, and E.
SM-1 SHEET METAL
This classification includes any project whose primary construction is of sheet
metal. Plans including the pattern development (stretch out view) are required.
Examples: (Tool box, parts tray, parts washing pan, pipe, elbow, transition
piece, or scoop.)
Awards in Groups A, B, C, D, and E.
MF-1 FOUNDRY
Any project made by a metal casting process is eligible. The casting will be
a finished project with an accompanying rough casting that has a gate system.
A pattern may be substituted in lieu of a drawing.
Awards in Groups A, B, C,D, and E.
MW-1 METAL WELDING
An eligible project is one in which the major operation is welding, or brazing,
or both. Examples: (Large items only: such as: trailer, gate, or swing set,
engine stands, or items larger than 3'x3'x3')
Awards in Groups A, B, C, D, and E.
MM-1 MACHINE METALS
This classification includes any project in which the machining of metal constitutes
the major operations. Examples: (V-block, step block, scriber, jig, fixture,
or machined casting.)
Awards in Groups A, B, C, D, and E.
MC-1 MACHINE CONSTRUCTION
Any machining involving construction and assembly of parts requiring a significant
amount of both bench operations and machine operations is eligible. Examples:
(Drill press, wood lathe, bench grinder, or belt sander)
Awards in Groups B, C, D, and E.
MM-2 COMPUTER AIDED MACHINING
This classification includes any project in which the machining of metal constitutes
the major operations with the aid of a computer interface. A complete set of
plans must accompany the project. A printout of NC code must be included. Examples:
(V-block, step block, scriber, jig, fixture, or machined casting.)
Awards in Groups A, B, C, D, and E.
