EPA’s purpose is to ensure that all Americans are protected from significant risks to human health and the environment where they live, learn, and work. EPA and HUD are charged with protecting children’s health through lead-based paint prevention activities, including detection and treatment of lead-based paint poisoning, limiting lead use in certain consumer items, and banning the use of lead-based interior paints in residences. The EPA has also provided grants to 50 U.S. communities to revitalize inner-city brownfields and has set pollution control standards to reduce air toxins.
