MSD, an independent public agency, is responsible for sewers, sewage treatment, and the drainage of rainwater from 524 square miles of St. Louis City and St. Louis County. To carry out these tasks, it maintains a $6.5 billion network of pipes, improved creeks, drainage canals, and treatment plants.

MODOT District Six (the St. Louis Metro District) serves the City of St. Louis and four surrounding counties. MODOT is responsible for maintaining interstate highways and parts of a few arterial streets in the City of St. Louis. MODOT has been actively involved in various projects in the City, including the I-70 reconstruction, proposals to cover the depressed lanes of I-70 downtown, and planning for the future Mississippi River Bridge near Madison Street. MODOT is also involved in conducting Major Transportation Investment Analyses (MTIAs) with East-West Gateway Coordinating Council for various transportation-related projects.
