Operation Brightside is a non-profit public-private partnership working toward a cleaner, more attractive environment for the St. Louis community. In 1982, community leaders, businesses, labor unions, schools, churches, neighborhood organizations and local government were able to create an urban greening partnership that addresses many of the serious environmental and youth employment issues facing the city. Program components and successes include Project Blitz: a city-wide clean-up and beautification effort involving over 75,000 volunteers each year working to improve their neighborhoods by clearing more than 7 million pounds of trash from streets, alleys and vacant lots and planting 350,000 flowers on public property; Project Greenlot: 1996 marked the completion of a 15 year program to revitalize vacant lots throughout St. Louis. Through the efforts of the Operating Engineers Local 513 more than 13,000 overgrown vacant lots have been cleared, graded, seeded and are now in a regular maintenance program; Project Flower Shower: over 12 million daffodil bulbs have been planted on the highways in addition to the millions of annuals planted by volunteers throughout the city. Environmental Youth Corps; Young people learn skills and team work while providing a much needed community service- removing graffiti from public and private buildings throughout the city. Since 1992, Brightside crews have removed graffiti from more than 35,000 locations.
