The site for the Edward H. Long School was purchased by the Board of Education in 1912. The ground, when purchased, contained a brick house, which was altered so that it would be suitable for a school room. There were no sidwalks or paved streets at this time. The school was known as the Morganford Road School and opened with an enrollment of 41 students. The first principal was Miss Agnes Dunsford, who served until 1917.
The enrollment increased so much that eventually eleven portable buildings were added. In 1916 the school's name was changed to the Edward H. Long School in honor of Edward H. Long, a progressive superintendent of the St. Louis Public Schools. In November of 1922 ground was broken for a new eighteen-room building. In December of 1923 the pupils, teachers and the principal transferred all the books and supplies from the portables to the new building. By this time there were seventeen teachers and the enrollment had grown to 771. The principal at this time was Mr. Ben C. Milster.
Now, we are known as the Bevo Long Middle Community Education Center. We are one of sixteen Community Education Centers operating within the St. Louis Public School District. Our class offerings and program policies are determined by a local Advisory Council, which is comprised of persons who live, work, are parents of students or have an interest in the area. The Advisory Council meets every month (except August) on the second Thursday of the month (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. at the school. The meetings are open to the public.
Staffing at the Community Education Center includes the Principal, Mr. Dave Eaton, the Coordinator, Ms. Patrice Crotty, and the Assistant to the Coordinator, and all the fine teachers who bring their talents and expertise to the many classes offered at the School.
During the day, 6th, 7th and 8th grade middle school students fill the school. Pre-school is open from 9:30 a.m. until noon. At 2:15, when the Middle School students begin to leave, the gym fills with Community Education Center participants for open Gym and just lounging. At 6:00 p.m.the school fills with adults enjoying a curriculum which includes GED preparation, vocational and remedial courses, classes in arts and hobbies, music and dance, languages, financial planning, fitness and recreation activities, and much, much more.
The Community School has three full terms (fall, winter and spring) each year. We also offer one-night workshops and a short summer session. Exercise, dancing, music, Karate for Kids and art classes usually continue throughout the year with few breaks. A listing of courses is mailed to anyone who atended a class or anyone requesting to be on our mailing list. There is someone in the office of the Community School after 2:00 p.m. The Middle School office is open during regular school hours.
