The Carondelet Historical Society was founded in 1967 by a group of Carondelet
residents whose purpose was to preserve the rich heritage of Carondelet. There
were 353 charter members. Our membership to day is 358. In 1970 a large
plaque was erected in Bellerive Park, overlooking the Mississippi River,
describing the founding of Carondelet and important dates related to the growth
of the community. Also, plaques have been placed on 45 sites of historic
significance, including businesses, churches and homes - each having its own
unique place in Carondelet's heritage. Historical papers, books, furniture and
many other items have been collected over the years. In
February, 1980, plans to acquire headquarters for the society were initiated.
The Family Care Center of Carondelet had purchased the Cook's Market complex
in the 6300 block of Michigan Avenue and did not need the Des Peres School building
(now the Cardondelet Historic Center). It was offered to the Society and the
Susan Blow Foundation. In April, 1981, the building was purchased from
the Family Care Center.

Rendezvous Carondelet began it's adventure Jan. 1, 1998 in the imaginations of two of Carondelet's most fervent fans, Noel Stasiak and Leigh Leonard. Forever interested in their neighborhood, they set out on their quest to fully employ their skills and imagination to the benefit of their community. Rendezvous Carondelet was born. Their mission statement: a Nonprofit corporation dedicated to the history, preservation and well being of the Carondelet Community. Spice that up with some old time fun and they were on their way. First, they had an old fashioned Rendezvous 1700's style. Oh, did they wow the crowd as they floated bravely (in costume) down the Mississippi in one small canoe to Bellerive Park. They disembarked at the foot of Elwood St., to proclaim the beginning of the Rendezvous Fest and the beginning of their continuing endeavors in their community. Since then, the duo have presented to Carondelet a Civil War Family Camp out, a community Flea Market at Blow School, a USO type Canteen Dance, a blue grass festival, participate with their Cafe Rendezvous, an outdoor old fashioned hot dog stand, selling their wares at various sites including the Carondelet Concerts in the Park on Sundays throughout the summertime. They have been funded by the Missouri Arts Council in the past on their projects. They look forward to a bright and promising future for their organization and their Carondelet neighborhood.
We came to Carondelet in1836 as the Sister of St. Joseph of Lyons (France) at the invitation of the Catholic Bishop of St. Louis. They soon became known as the Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet. They have taken the name of Carondelet to many parts of the world as an outstanding teaching order of Religious women.
The South Broadway Merchants' Association, founded in 1985, represents a variety of businesses throughout the Carondelet area. With a current membership of 60 businesses, and a mailing list of 300 businesses, community groups, and citizens, the association acts as a clearinghouse for business-related information from city, state, and federal officials. The group mails a monthly newsletter, plans monthly meetings, and holds a variety of fundraising events.
SBMA projects include beautification projects such as clean-up, flower planting, and weedspraying in the neighborhood. Several youth groups receive mini-grants for activities to develop youth leaders, and to teach responsible citizenship. For further information, call Mary Lopinot at the number listed above.
American Legion Post 37 received its charter on October 27, 1932. At one time it had the largest membership in St. Louis with over a thousand members. The old Post home, which stood at the corner of Broadway and Gasconade Streets for fifty years(1946-1996), was known for its world class all night bar-b-ques. Known as Triangle Park because of the shape of the property, it was host to many a school picnic. It is best remembered for its famous landmark, a 155 mm cannon, which stood guard in front of the Post from 1949 (some say it was pointed at the city). The old Post home was sold to make way for a new drug store. The cannon will return in the near future to its original location looking better than ever. The members of Post 37 are temporarily located at Bates and Alabama Streets until a new Post Home is found. Post 37 is alive and well and we invite all elegible veterans to attend a meeting and learn more about the American Legion.
