Remembrance of Things Past

Remember facerags and dishrags and headrags
before they became face cloths and dish cloths and scarves

Remember when
Hostess Cupcakes and Twinkies and Baby Ruths and Snickers were big
and you had to throw all-day suckers away

Remember grape and cherry anything
Remember
day-old Wonder Bread
the Marquette and the Regal and the Criterion Theaters
pomegranates
jawbreakers and oranges with peppermint sticks
mama peg and double dutch
Remember porches

and pumping yourself up in a swing standing up
and the jungle jim

Remember castor oil in orange juice and enemas
Kotex
getting your hair straightened in the kitchen and the curler on the
   stove
Remember the stove

Remember using paper clips to clean the wax out of your ears
roller skates and methiolate and flesh-colored band-aids
Bleach 'n' Glow and Clearsil

Remember starch and stretching curtains on woods frames
petticoats and clotheslines
white blouses with false collars
pleated skirts and knee socks
sweater sets

Remember short-haired girls
bow ribbons
getting a lining instead of a haircut
your Grandmother when your mother was at work
being colored

Remember gym and being told that you had to have a jock strap
the way the wood floor smelled
smoking outside the school building

Remember teachers

Remember Howard Johnson's and wrist corsages and plaid
    cummerbunds
and clip-on bowties

Remember
giving your marbles away
letting your little brother ride your bike whenever he wanted to
leather coats and Stacy Adams and Dobbs' Hats and white
    boys' shoes
your best friend

Remember when you had to start using deodorant
Remember watching your pubic hair grow
Remember those dreams
and Graduating from high school
and Kodak cameras
and leaving home
