Step 6 -- The media

Consider ways to advertise your web fair through the media. How do you want them to cover your event? You may want to develop a media packet that contains a press release, information about your event, and information about your organization. This can also be a good way to draw attention to the other work your organization does. Your goal is to bring the media to the event. Your steering committee members may have contacts with the media that you can use to get out the word.

Give out your press release announcing your event to try to get coverage of it. As the time of the event draws near, contact the media to remind them of it and distribute a media packet.

On the day of the event, have the media packet available for distribution.

It is generally easier to get media coverage of your event when the mayor (or some other high-profile civic figure) is there. Where the mayor is, the media are.

Take advantage of the local community/municipal cable channel (if you have one). Have your event taped. Then you will have footage you can use to promote future events and to promote your group/agency.

After the event is over, follow up with local/neighborhood newspapers (see Step 10).
