The City of St. Louis Community Information Network offers the following classes:

Introduction to CIN & the Internet

    What you should know before taking the class: It is recommended that you are comfortable using a computer (with a mouse) for such tasks as word processing or data entry.

    What the class covers: What is the St. Louis CIN, What is the Internet, Internet Terminology, Navigating the Internet, Doing Internet Searches

Intermediate Internet

    What you should know before taking the class: You should be able to browse the web and be able to do searches.

    What the class covers: Downloading files, programs, and images; Browser plug-ins; file formats available over the web (.pdf or .zip); Protocol types; Where to get software available on the Internet.

Creating Web Pages/HTML
This is a two day class - Bring a disk with you to class

    What you should know before taking the class: In addition to being comfortable using a computer, you should also be comfortable browsing and searching the Internet. It would be helpful to have taken (or be knowledgeable of the material covered) in both the Introductory and Intermediate Internet classes.

    What the class covers: What is HTML, Required HTML Tags, Basic formatting tags (bolding, centering, new paragraphs), Lists, How to see the HTML code for other web pages, Images, Background and Text Color, Links, Design consdierations, HTML Editors and graphics software, What is FTP and How to FTP (put a web page on the Internet).

    Consider signing up for the Tables class at the same time.

Open Lab
    This is not an instructional class. The open lab is a time for CIN members to use a computer lab and receive some assistance with Internet-related questions (i.e., searching suggestions, web page assistance). You must register for this class, but you can specify a time you will arrive.
Tables

    What you should know before taking the class: You should have a basic knowledge of HTML. Many people take this class the same week they take the Creating Web Pages class.

    What the class covers: Tables allow the web developer to have greater control of layout of the page. Tables allows the creation of a background grid for the page.

On-Line Forms

    What you should know before taking the class: You should have a good basic knowledge of HTML.

    What the class covers: How to create on-line forms, cgi scripts, the use of on-line forms.

Web Page Workshop
    This is not an instructional class. The workshop is designed for people to come and work on their web pages and receive some assitance on particular problems or ask questions. You should bring your web page files to the workshop on disk or know how the to download them. You should already have taken the Creating Web Pages class or know basic HTML.
Using Cascading Stylesheets for Your Web Pages

    Cascading stylesheets allow you to control design of your pages more easily and keep your page file sizes smaller and faster, and make them easier to maintain.

    What you should know before taking the class: You should have a good basic knowledge of HTML.

    What the class covers: What is a stylesheet, when should they be used, and how to set them up.

Designing Accessible Web Pages (Meeting ADA requirements)

    What you should know before taking the class: You should have a good basic knowledge of HTML.

    What the class covers: It's important when designing web pages to make sure that they are accessible to people with disabilities. This class will discuss the current "Web Content Accessibility Guidelines" promoted by the Word Wide Web Consortium. Following these guidelines will also make your web content more available to all users, regardless of disability, environment or technology.
