Downloading: Software
Many types of software can be downloaded from the web. Downloading software is often more convenient than going to a store or ordering over the phone because you can get it faster and sometimes cheaper. Some software available on the web is free -called Freeware, others you have to pay for. Many programs will allow you to try it out before paying for it (normally by emailing a credit card number to the company).
Commonly downloaded software includes: upgrades of Internet browsers, email programs, FTP software, file compression programs, Adobe Acrobat Reader, web page editors, games, and screensavers.
Steps to Downloading Software
1. Locate Software Program to Download
- www.tucows.com: This web site organizes software by category. It provides a description of the category and rates the software on a 5-cow system.
- www.shareware.com: You need to know the name of the software you want to download.
- Company's web site
2. Download File
Click on the link for downloading the desired file. You will have to designate a directory location.
3. Scan for Viruses
Any executable files can contain viruses. It is always recommend that you scan any files of this type before running them.
4. Unzip File (if necessary)
Many programs and larger files come in a "zipped" (compressed) format for faster downloading. Compressed files will have a ".zip" file extension. They have to be un-zipped before they can be installed (Compression software is available free - see step 1).
5. Install Program
Open File Manager or Windows Explorer and find the file that you downloaded. Double-click on it to start the installation process. It will take you through the process. With Windows 95/98 you can also go to Add Programs under the Start button/Settings/Control Panel.
6. Open/Use the Program
You are now ready to use the program you downloaded. For Windows 95/98 look under the Start button/Programs to find it.
