Downloading:
File Types

  • Compressed Files

These are files that have had "air" sucked out of them to make them smaller and more maneagable. The files are not functional when compressed. Files found on the Internet are often compressed because download time is shorter when the file is smaller.

Compressed files have the ".zip" file extension. They are often referred to as "zipped" files. You need file compression software to zip and unzip files. Two popular ones are WinZip and PKZip. See Downloading Software for instrunctions on getting compression software.

  • Adobe Acrobat Files

Adobe Acrobat files have ".pdf" file extensions. This type of file looks the same no matter what platform you have - PC, Mac, or Unix. This makes it a popular choice for forms (tax forms, employment application), conference prochures, and other documents. More about PDF files and how to download Adobe Acrobat Reader.
