Downloading:
Images

Images on the web are of 2 file types:

  • .gif
  • .jpg (or .jpeg)
These are the only types that will display on a web page. .bmp, .tif and other common graphic types must be converted using a graphics program.

Any image found on the web can easily be downloaded to your computer. However, images can be copyrighted. If in doubt, get permission before using the image.

    Downloading Images

    1. Click on the image with the right mouse button. A pop-up menu will appear.
    2. Choose "Save Image/Picture As". The Save As dialog box will appear.
    3. Select the directory to save the image. You may rename the image at this time. However, do not change the file extension.

You can view the image by:
    1. Click on the File drop down menu in your browser and select Open.
    2. Change the "File Type" in the bottom left area to All Files and direct it to where the image is saved.
    3. Double click on the image file name.
Or open the image in a graphics program or use Insert Picture in a word processing program.

    Finding Images

  • Use a search engine. Several search engines allow you to search specifically for images, including Lycos and Alta Vista.

  • Graphics Libraries. These are web sites that make graphics available for people to use on their web pages. Sometimes they request that credit be given on the web site for the image. Yahoo maintains a list of graphics libraries.
