Creating Web Pages:
Learning How

Web pages are created using a language called HTML (hypertext mark-up language). HTML consists of tags that control how the text and graphics are displayed in the browser. After learning some basic rules of HTML, it essentially comes down to vocabulary. Most people are pleasantly surprised at just how easy it is to create a webpage.

The St. Louis Community Information Network offers a Creating Web Pages class available to CIN account holders. There are also many on-line resources for learning HTML. Two good resources are Writing HTML and Webmonkey, but you can find many other on-line tutorials by entering "HTML tutorial" in any search engine.

Software

You do not need special software to create web pages. You can use Notepad (the simple word processing program that comes with Windows) and your Internet browser. However, if you spend much time creating web pages you might be intersted in using web page software. There are two types:

  • WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get). With this type of software you do not need to know any HTML. However, you do not have as much control over the design of the page.

  • HTML Editor. You must know HTML to use this software but it makes creating a web page easier by providing shortcut buttons so you do not have to type in all the coding. This type of software gives you complete control of your web page.

See Downloading Software for more information on obtaining web page software.
