This survey identifies over 2,260 parcels of land potentially having environmenally adverse conditions. Such land uses include manufacturing plants, food processing facilities, apartment complexes (greater than 10 units), bus terminals, taxi yards, contractors yards, department store buildings, transfer companies, junks yards, large office buildings, theaters, warehouses, fire stations and power transformers.
Many large apartment buildings, or "hotels", contained heating oil tanks buried on site. After converting to natural gas heating systems, owners left the tanks buried, often full of heating oil, and tanks remain buried, forgotten, even after the structures have been demolished. Over 650 parcels associated with such buildings have been identified in this survey.
During the construction of a parking lot, near Goodfellow and Delmar, where an apartment building had once been, one of those forgotten, buried heating oil tanks, lying just a couple of feet below grade, still full of petroleum, was struck by a backhoe bucket and punctured. Mixing with rainwater, this leaking oil contaminated nearly one-forth of the property. The necessitated cleanup effort added tens of thousands of dollars to the parking lot project.
Pictured at right is Grant Public School, 3011 Pennsylvania, built in 1893. School buildings and institutional homes often contain lead-based paint, asbestos materials, and underground heating oil tanks. Over the years, demolition of these structures included on-site burial of burial of such material and has not addressed underground tank closure. Over 400 parcels associated with school buildings and insitutional homes are part of this survey.
Included in this survey are small neighborhood manufacturing facilities, bottling plants, food processing plants, even movie theaters
A former bottling plant, just one of over 70 bottling plants, and just one among over 500 small neighborhood manufacturing, warehouse and processing facilities, identified in this survey. Such facilities often have underground storage tanks and asbestos materials
