ST. LOUIS SUMMER FINANCE INSTITUTE (SFI)

Summer Finance Institute (SFI) Logo Mission
To introduce St. Louis local high school students to careers in finance and prepare them for college and their future careers by teaching them necessary skills in a real-world work environment.

About the Summer Finance Institute
The St. Louis Summer Finance Institute (SFI) gives St. Louis high school students the opportunity to learn about-and participate in-careers in finance. Comptroller Darlene Green created the St. Louis Summer Finance Institute in 1996, graduating 104 students to date (download student brochure here).

For eight weeks, students complete an intensive internship program consisting of 320 hours of hands-on work experience and weekly training seminars. Students receive a regular paycheck for putting in 32 hours a week at area banks, investment firms and city government. In addition, students spend eight hours a week at a day-long training seminar designed to supplement their work experience. During these seminars, students learn finance basics like how to read the Wall Street Journal, how to pick and purchase stocks, and work together on a culminating project.

Students are assigned a mentor from each participating company during the program. The mentoring relationship reinforces the student's sense of professionalism regarding good work habits, team and relationship building, proper dress code and office etiquette.

The St. Louis Summer Finance Institute is headed by a dedicated board of directors made up of local business, financial and legal professionals. The Board volunteers its time to fundraise, plan the curriculum and organize the program's activities ensuring the students have a quality learning experience every year.

Darlene Green Scholarship Fund
Each year, three students are awarded a $1,000 college scholarship from the Darlene Green Scholarship Fund. One recipient is a graduate of the year's Summer Finance Institute, one is a member of the Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club, and one is a member of Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club. Herbert Hoover and Mathews-Dickey club members can get information on the scholarships from their respective clubs or by contacting Judy Armstrong (download the Darlene Green Scholarship application here).
