City Court Amnesty Program - A Success Story

At 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 12 there were 25 people in line at the City Court Building waiting for the doors to open at 8 a.m. All wanted to take part in the City Court amnesty program.

Thanks to Ed Rhode, of the Mayor's Office, for the great job he did in getting the word out to the many different radio stations and television stations that carried all necessary details of the day to the general public.

Thanks to members of the City Counselor's Office that supplied back-up support for the Judges in the courtrooms and to the many Marshals that handled security and crowd control issues for the day.

Special thanks to Judges Theresa Burke, Richard Torack and James Wahl as well as to the staff of the City Clerk's Office. Through the coordinating efforts of Yvette Mayham and Paul Mehta the day was a success in all ways.

The line of people to be serviced was cut off at 3 p.m. Some 25 people were turned away. Everyone was accommodated by 6:15 p.m.

In all, 600 defendants, many with multiple cases, were serviced with 1,565 cases brought to disposition.

The pictures below show the line along the 15th Street side of the Courthouse. The first shot was taken at 9 a.m. and the second shot was taken at 2:30 p.m.
