AARP Hosts 13th Annual “Celebration
of Life” Health Fair
AARP hosted its annual “Celebration of Life” Health Fair on
Oct. 14. In line with its motto, “To serve, not be served,”
AARP’s Celebration of Life had more than 50 organizations participating
in the Health Fair. The organizations provided services, information,
and health screenings (including the flu shot). More than 600
seniors attend this popular health fair.
Dan Gray, KPLR Channel 11 News co-anchor, was the event’s
keynote speaker. Gray opened the session with the story of
how the Lone Ranger received his name and how he met his sidekick,
Tonto. Gray used this story to say that while we think of these
mythical figures as heroes, the true heroes are the persons
that volunteer their time to make our communities better places
to live. Gray’s speech was met with a resounding round of applause.
The Bates Street Folk & Blues Band provided music for
the event. This four-piece band started their performance by
walking through the Vendor’s room and winding their way to
the auditorium. The Bates Street Folk & Blues Band played
a variety of songs including: “More Pretty Girls Than One,”
“This Land is Your Land,” with two original verses, and “Good
Night Irene.”
“Celebration of Life” partners include: the Missouri Botanical
Garden, SSM Health Care, Lutheran Senior Services, and the
City of St. Louis Area Agency on Aging.
