Spending the Holidays Overseas

The holiday season is fast approaching and before you know it, you’ll be e-mailing or U.S. mailing this year’s holiday greeting cards. As you prepare your list of greeting card recipients, remember to include those who are farthest away from home, U.S. soldiers deployed overseas.

The holidays can be a difficult time for those of us with family and friends in the military, but it is even more difficult for the soldiers who are thousands of miles from anything that reminds them of home. If you know someone overseas, let them know they are in your thoughts and send them a letter and/or care package. If you don’t know anyone overseas, consider sending holiday greetings to the soldiers in the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division in Afghanistan. First Sergeant Ann Sydnor, is determined to bring holiday cheer to her soldiers. Below is a list of items that you might find around the house, which could help the soldiers feel more at home and/or pass the time. Remember, letters and packages take around three weeks to be delivered, so send them early.

Soldiers might enjoy:
- Letters
- Greeting Cards
- Holiday themed decorations
- Board Games
- Card Games
- Magazines
- Puzzles
- Local newspapers /comics
- Photos of you/your family/your City
- Books (preferably paperback)
- Visit www.thesoldiersfamily.com for care package ideas

Items can be sent to:
