Silver Haired Legislature

“The Silver Haired Legislature brought to the attention of Senators and Representatives the bills and future legislation pertaining to seniors in the City of St. Louis. The day was a huge success based on the participation of the Silver Haired Legislature members throughout the state of Missouri,” said Bruce Yampolsky, Advocacy Chair for the Missouri Silver Haired Legislature and President of the City of St. Louis Silver Haired Legislature.

The City of St. Louis Silver Haired Legislature (SHL) recently assisted in coordinating a statewide advocacy day in Jefferson City, MO. More than 80 senior citizens from throughout the state of Missouri gathered Feb. 27 to advocate as part of the Aging Advocacy Day.

Over the past two years, the Silver Haired Legislators have lobbied for a single entry point and an increase in meal funding. In 2007-2008, the group also decided to tackle raising asset levels for Medicaid eligibility, regulation of pay day loans, and personal needs allowance for Medicaid residents in LTC facilities.

Throughout the day, the Silver Haired legislators met with their Senators and Representatives regarding the before mentioned priorities and exemplified their effect on the senior population. The goal of the Aging Advocacy Day was to remind legislators in Jefferson City of the issues most important to senior citizens across the state. The members of the City of St. Louis Silver Haired Legislature played an important role in this process.

The SHL will continue to advocate for these priority issues throughout the year by testifying for bills, speaking to community groups, and continuing to educate others about issues related to seniors.
