And the Winners Are …

Three employees of the Assessor’s Office received 2nd Quarter Employee Recognition Awards during special ceremonies on July 18. The trio was selected by the department’s committee based on nominations from staff and the public.

Venus Cowper, Clerk Typist IVenus Cowper, Clerk Typist II in the Personal Property Section, won her second award for Outstanding Customer Service. The Employee Recognition Committee felt that the many customer comments and letters commending Ms. Cowper merited the repeat recognition. One nominator said, “Venus was absolutely exceptional and a delight to deal with,” while another stated that she was “very pleasant and helpful…a good representative of the City of St. Louis.”

Carolyn Skidmore, Real Property Appraiser IICarolyn Skidmore, Real Property Appraiser II in the Commercial Real Estate Section, was recognized for Outstanding Performance. As one of only six commercial appraisers, Ms. Skidmore certainly had her work cut out for her in this difficult reassessment year. Her award attests to her exemplary performance. While her co-workers praised her willingness to help them through trying times, one customer noted of Carolyn’s approach, “No one likes taxes, but for once I feel that my City Hall was open and welcoming me to present my case, which makes the pain more bearable.”

Larry Washington, Personal Property Appraiser ILarry Washington, Personal Property Appraiser I, is another two-timer! That is to say that he previously won an award for customer service. This time Mr. Washington was honored with the Teamwork Award. If you know Larry, you’ll know why. He’s always friendly and ready to help on any job. And as one visitor to the office noted, “Mr. Washington was very professional, courteous and a pleasure to work with. Changes my fear of government offices!”

Assessor Ed Bushmeyer noted that reassessment, the Board of Equalization and the annual April 1st deadline for filing Personal Property returns made for a very challenging 2nd quarter. “Our entire staff is to be commended for rising to the challenges. Our three winners helped to lead the way.”

The employee recognition awards were instituted in December 2003 to recognize the department’s top performers.
