A change to the city’s travel policy prompted the comptroller’s asset management section to upgrade the pool car fleet. The travel policy no longer allows for reimbursement for personal vehicle use when traveling within the State of Missouri. Instead, those on official city business must sign out a pool car from the Municipal Garage.

The city recently purchased three late model vehicles that are now in the inventory for city workers to use on official business. The 2007 Ford Taurus’ will provide city employees greater safety, reliability and comfort compared to older fleet vehicles.

“Some of the places people go on official business are hundreds of miles from St. Louis and we knew that employees had some reservations about taking some of our older vehicles that far out of town. These new cars should alleviate those concerns,” said Jim Garavaglia, the comptroller’s asset manager.

In the past, official travel within the state cost taxpayers more than $10,000 a year. The new travel policy will bring that amount down to zero.

By far, the most frequent destinations for official city travel are Lake of the Ozarks and Jefferson City. Reimbursing employees just shy of $100 per trip, it did not take long for the cost of using personal vehicles to add up.

So, what does it take to get a city car? Garage manager Larry Arnowitz says signing out a car is easy.

“All a person needs to do is get their out of town travel request approved. We’ll make sure the tank is full and the car is clean and ready to go at the date and time they need it,” explained Arnowitz.

Reserve a pool car at the Municipal Garage by calling 622-3520.

City employees can contact Joanna Stoverink at 622-4728 with questions about the travel policy.
