We Come From Planet Earth

Earth Day is April 22nd…And Every Day! There are many options for you to contemplate and protect this whirling sphere we call home. Maybe you have time to care, money to share, or both. As you’ll note below, there’s something for everybody.

Join the City of St. Louis Refuse Division’s Recycling Program in Carondelet Park on Saturday, April 19, 2008. Celebrate Carondelet Park Day will be hosted by the Keep Holly Hills Beautiful Committee and the Friends of Carondelet Park. Free and open to the public, this event will be held from 9am to 4pm at the Boathouse (visible just north from Loughborough Avenue). Volunteers interested in park beautification can meet at 9am to help in a Clean-Up Effort. As one of the exhibitors, Refuse Division staff members will be there to share information and answer questions about home composting, native plants (which can thrive without hazardous lawn and garden chemicals), where to recycle a wide variety of materials (e.g., books, electronic media, textiles), and what kinds of reused- and recycled-content products are available around town (e.g., apparel, gardening tools, home décor, office supplies). Updates will be available about what City Government is doing to “walk the talk” by greening itself.

As a City employee, you can make donations to Earth Share of Missouri by arranging for deductions directly from your paycheck (pre-tax). You can designate that your donation be made to a local or national organization (if they’re members of Earth Share). If you prefer that your donation stays local, you can designate that it be generally distributed throughout Earth Share of Missouri, or you can specify that it be distributed to a specific organization in Missouri or the St. Louis Area. Of the Missouri Member Organizations, those that work on waste reduction, reuse, and recycling related efforts (and in the St. Louis area) include Greenway Network, Missouri Coalition for the Environment, Missouri Environmental Education Association, Missouri River Relief, Sierra Club, and The Green Center. Earth Share of Missouri and some of their Member Organizations will have booths at the Missouri Botanical Garden on Saturday, April 19, 2008, if you’d like to get to know them or the work that they do. Take a walk through the St. Louis Earth Day’s Festival in Forest Park. It will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2008 from 11am to 6pm on the Muny Grounds. In previous years, reduce/reuse/recycle-related exhibitors have included Biocorp (compostable utensils, bowls, plates, cups); EarthWays Center (classes for children and adults); Home Eco (recycled housewares); Leftovers, etc. (reuse), PaperRetriever (paper); Pedro’s Planet (recycled office supplies); Remains (textiles); St. Louis Teachers’ Recycle Center (reuse); and the Recycle Challenge (aluminum cans). Do you have any idea how Earth Day started, or why anybody thought of having a special day for our very own Third Rock from the Sun? You can learn all about this and more at the website of the Earth Day Network (http://ww2.earthday.net), which was founded by the organizers of Earth Day, first held in 1970.
