Grant and Loans

The Affordable Housing Commission has recently awarded grants and loans totaling $5.3 million to neighborhood organizations and local developers of affordable housing.

Funding for the awards is generated by the City’s Use Tax--$5 million in Use Tax proceeds each year are committed to the City’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Of the $5,390,000 awarded this year, $980,000 was awarded to five development projects helping to create 45 new rental and for-sale housing units.

The Commission also funded a new initiative to help low and moderate income City homeowners in danger of experiencing foreclosure. Five agencies organized as “St. Louis Alliance for Homeownership Preservation” —Better Family Life, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Beyond Housing, Catholic Charities Housing Resource Center and ACORN—will provide public awareness, counseling, and mortgage assistance using $250,000 provided by the Commission. The City’s Board of Aldermen, working with the Mayor’s Office, has appropriated an additional $250,000 to match that amount, making a total of $500,000 available to the collaborative to assist in averting foreclosures and helping homeowners remain in their homes. Persons requiring foreclosure prevention services should call 1(888)995-HOPE for assistance.

In addition, more than 40 other grants to non-profit agencies were approved, paying for such services as home repairs, rent and utility assistance, and transitional housing for St. Louis City residents.

By ordinance, funds are designated to assist persons who are 80% and below of the area median income. Additionally, at least 40 percent of funds awarded must benefit persons or families that are 20% or below the area median income.
