Money
Matters
As the Collector of Revenue, my employees and I talk to taxpayers
everyday who face financial hardship. With the mortgage crisis
and state of the national economy, the amount of people with
financial hardships has dramatically increased. This has a very
direct impact on our local economy and our City Employees.
Here is some information that may be helpful to you during these
difficult economic times. Please pass it on to your friends
and family.
If you are behind on your house payments or are in danger of
losing your home to foreclosure, free help is available. Call
888-995-HOPE anytime, any day. Calling the number will put you
in touch with a government-approved counselor with the non-profit
Homeownership Preservation Foundation. A counselor will gather
your information and explain what options are available based
on your situation.
It is very important that you not wait until it is too late.
So, if you or someone you care about is in trouble, please make
the call.
As the April 15th tax deadline approaches, please be sure to
file your federal, state, and local tax returns. Under the Economic
Stimulus Act of 2008, more than 130 million American households
will receive economic stimulus payments beginning in May. The
only way to get one is to file a federal tax return for 2007.
This filing requirement also applies to some people who do not
normally file, including many low-income people and recipients
of Social Security, certain benefits received from the Department
of Veterans Affairs and certain Railroad Retirement benefits.
For more information on the Economic Stimulus Payments you
can visit www.irs.gov.
