Help For Mortgage Crisis

I want everyone to keep their home. But I know there are many city residents who are in danger of losing their houses due to the mortgage crisis.

Our response to the home mortgage crisis is the creation of the St. Louis Alliance for Home Ownership Preservation. At my request and with the approval of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment, the City’s Affordable Housing Commission and the City will set aside $500,000 to help families keep their homes.

Last year, nearly 2,500 homes were foreclosed in the City of St. Louis. We are worried there will be even more this year.

Home foreclosures do incredible damage. Families lose their main connection to the American dream. It can also set back a family’s financial well being for many, many years. Foreclosures also tear at the fabric of neighborhoods. Vacant and abandoned buildings can become a source of blight and bring down property values. Obviously, we all know how the mortgage crisis is bringing down the economy. complete story >>

Personal Property Tax Forms Due

The 2008 individual and business tangible personal property declaration forms for the City of St. Louis are due no later than April 1, 2008. Under state law, individuals and firms not filing by the April 1st deadline are subject to a mandatory 10% filing penalty.

Taxpayers who did not receive a form in the mail but own personal property are still required to fill out a declaration form. For further information, contact the Assessor’s Office at 314/622-4171 for individual accounts or 314/622-4181 for business accounts. Due to the high volume of calls expected at the end of March, it is suggested that taxpayers needing additional information contact the Assessor’s Office as soon as possible.

Declaration forms can be obtained and filled out in person at the Assessor’s Office in Room 115 at City Hall, 1200 Market Street, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The forms can also be downloaded from the City’s web site at www.stlouis.missouri.org

Any mail postmarked on or before April 1, 2008 will be accepted as a timely filing.

Start! Heart Walk Announced

City employees have been invited by the American Heart Association (AHA) to participate in this year's Heart Walk on May 3 and to simply start walking to improve their health.

According to the AHA, heart disease and stroke are the #1 and #2 killers of St. Louis men and women. One of every two women will die from cardiovascular disease, compared to one in 29 who will die from breast cancer. More than 65 million American adults are overweight.

The AHA's Start! initiative aims to change the statistics in St. Louis by calling on everyone to join the Start! movement and start walking.

Each City department is encouraged to form a team for this annual event which will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 3 at Cricket Field in Forest Park.

Dear City Employees,

The deadline for news items for the May Newsgram is Wednesday, April 23.

We encourage all departments to find news items to send to us for the next edition. We are asking every department to designate one person to send us staff news, photos, information on events and any information you would like to share with your fellow city employees. Send us the articles in Microsoft Word with the photos separate.

We need you to tell us what’s going on!

Please email news items and photos to: newsgram@stlouiscity.com.
