Mayor Francis G. SlayMayor Slay Presents Service Awards

Mayor Francis G. Slay presented the 2008 Mayor’s Service Awards to city employees at a ceremony June 5.

Created in 1994, the Mayor’s Service Awards offer recognition to City employees who exceed job expectations and who make significant contributions to the quality of City services.

The selection committee reviewed approximately 50 nominations for the Mayor’s Service Awards.

Shown with Mayor Francis G. Slay are the recipients of the 2008 Mayor’s Service Awards: (from left) Lorna Alexander, Carolyn Roston, Michael Bertolini, Marvin Hailey, Mayor Slay, Darnita Riggins, Charlene Deeken and Reed Glasener.

“I applaud all our nominees. As with every year, while reading over the nomination forms it became evident to me that we have many outstanding people working for this City,” Slay said.

“These individuals exemplify what public service truly means. They are dedicated to their jobs, continually courteous to the public and routinely demonstrate a high level of commitment to the City,” Slay said. complete story >>

Arches on Parade Spark All-Star Week Fun

In a few weeks the national spotlight will be on St. Louis as we host the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and all of the fun and exciting activities that will be held in conjunction with this Midsummer Classic.

The Arches on Parade Program is one of the many free things fans will be able to do when they are in town. A total of 16 arches are on display in various locations through the City. In addition to City Hall, arches are located at Kiener Plaza, America’s Center, the Old Post Office, Forest Park, Busch Stadium and the St. Louis County Government Building.

Every All-Star Game is special, but this one – the 80th – is going to be particularly special, and it is the fifth one for St. Louis. The first All-Star Game here was held at Sportsmans Park in 1940. The last one, in 1966, was held at the previous Busch Stadium, the year it opened. Now the new Busch Stadium will be the setting of this annual contest that provides memories for generations of sports fans. It will also bring an economic impact of approximately $60 million to the St. Louis area. complete story >>
