Compost Section

The Compost Section takes the yard waste generated by St. Louis City residents and the Forestry Division and recycles it for use as compost and mulch, which is available free to all city residents.

Mulch and compost are available at various sites throughout the city for residential use. Sorry but there are no deliveries. But you can call 613-7200 or 868-1612 for a location near your home.

City residents with large amounts of yard waste can dispose of it once a month at the composting site at 560 Terminal Row (located off Hall Street) in the Baden area.

The site is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday except holidays. It is closed in January and February.

“We realize that many residents occasionally have too much yard waste to fit into the Dumpsters in the alleys or their roll-out carts,” said Greg Hayes, Forestry commissioner. “We want to improve service to our residents and also reduce illegal dumping by providing a site for residents to dispose of excess yard waste.”

The site will accept tree limbs under six inches in diameter, shrubs and leaves. Grass clippings will not be accepted. Residents will be allowed to dump one pick-up truck load per month. Commercial haulers are prohibited.

Individuals must provide proof of city residency in the form of either a driver’s license, personal property tax receipt or state identification card.

“Many people have large yards, numerous trees or big gardens and need to dispose large amounts of yard waste. This site will give them the flexibility of disposing of it at one time rather than putting small amounts in a Dumpster or cart over several weeks,” Hayes said.

The site is in addition to the drop-off sites offered by the Refuse Division. They allow residents to drop-off items from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 209 N. Humboldt and 4100 South 1st Street.
