The Forestry Division is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all St. Louisans by enhancing and maintaining the surrounding environment through a variety of services and programs offered through its four sections:

The Tree Section is responsible for more than 80,000 street trees and another 25,000 trees in city parks. The staff plants, prunes and removes street and parks trees and enforces the City Codes that regulate and protect trees.

The Weed Control Section maintains the vegetation growing on city property and on vacant, unkept lots and buildings throughout the city.

The Compost Section takes the yard waste generated by St. Louisians and the Forestry Division and recycles it for use as compost and mulch, which is available free of charge to city residents.

The District Debris Section is responsible for clearing debris from vacant lots and alleys throughout the city. The staff also removes graffiti and assists Operation Brightside in its efforts to beautify the city.

The Forestry Division is busy year-round responding to the needs of city residents. Each year the division:
  • plants 3,000 street trees
  • plants 1,500 park trees
  • prunes 7,730 street trees
  • prunes 820 park trees
  • removes 2,630 street trees
  • removes 820 park trees
  • removes 2,800 treee stumps
  • answers 2,220 calls for storm service
  • evaluates 20,000 trees for health and maintenance needs
  • recycles 16,000 Christmas trees
  • processes 30,000 cubic yards of yard waste
  • delivers 9,800 cubic yeards of compost to community pick-up and garden sites
  • cuts the grass of 6,400 vacant buildings
  • cuts the grass on 22,000 vacant lots
  • removes debris from vacant lots and alleys on a rotational schedule in all 28 wards
