The Forestry Division is dedicated to preserving the more than 115,000 trees that live on streets and in the parks in the City of St. Louis and would like to enlist the help of area residents in caring for trees.
To aid in the educational process, a new tree care kiosk has been built in the western portion of Aloe Plaza at 20th and Market streets.
The new kiosk was unveiled at the city's annual Arbor Day celebration. Shown in the photo are (left) Jamie Frank, urban forester, and Greg Hayes, Forestry Commsioner, looking at the tree care information in the kiosk.
The kiosk is a four-sided structure made of cedar with four aluminum display cases (that are locked with plexiglass windows) for holding informational material. It complements the Forestry Division's ongoing community forestry education and outreach efforts. Information in the kiosk will be changed once a year.

The information bulletins in the kiosk also can be found on the Tree Section of the Forestry Divsion's web page: http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/parks/forestry_div/tree.html
The kiosk was conceived and created by Jamie Frank, the city's urban forester: "I came up with the idea about two years ago while camping at National Park Service Campground. They had a two sided bulletin board with park information and people were always stopping to read it. I thought we could expand on that and create four-sided structure with enclosed display cases to put our Forestry Bulletins and other information. If we put in a well travelled location then we could reach a lot of people with our information."
With the support of Parks Director Gary Bess and Forestry Commissioner Greg Hayes, Jamie submitted a proposal to the Missouri Department of Conservation for grant funds to built the kiosk. The city recieved the grant, which paid for all the materials to build the kiosk and landscape it...as well as the materials to create the informational materials that are being displayed.
The site at 20th and Market was selected. Chris Bublis, the Parks Division construction foreman, finalized the conceptual design, ordered the building materials and the Parks Division carepenters built the kiosk.
Most of the material in the kiosk was created and published in house by the Forestry Division. The landscape for the kiosk was designed and installed by the Forestry Division.
A similiar kiosk is planned for Forest Park and more could be built and placed in other parks in the future.
The tree care kiosk unveiling is shown in the three photos below: it is located in new landscaped area at 20th and Market Streets. Photographers..both television and newspaper...were on hand to see the new kiosk at the Arbor Day tree planting.
