The City of St. Louis is home to more than 80,000 street trees valued at about $133 million. City parks account for another 25,000 trees. The management and care of this diverse population of trees is the responsibility of the Tree Section.

planting trees

The Tree Section plants, prunes and removes street and park trees. It enforces the city codes that regulate and protect trees. The staff develops landscape plans for public green spaces, manages and maintains street and park tree inventories, prepares federal and state grants, assists in hanging the holiday light displays downtown, plows snow, conducts tree evaluations, develops educational and interpretive programs and works with volunteer groups interested in community tree planting.

The Forestry Division plants trees in the “tree lawn,” the city right-of-way typically found between the curb and sidewalk. These trees are planted at no cost to the adjoining property owners.

Requests for street trees are taken from January 1 to June 1 each year. The tree lawn must be at least 36 inches wide for a tree to be planted. Residents can call the Citizens Service Bureau at 622-4800 or the Forestry Division at 613-7200 to request a tree.

A tree that is pruned periodically will have a better structure and requires less service as it matures. Every street tree is pruned on a rotational cycle -- approximately every seven years -- by the Tree Section.

The Forestry Division has created informational bulletins on trees. Click the links at left to view the bulletins. They are also available by calling 613-7200 or at the office at 1415 N. 13th St.
