weddings

Aloe Plaza in downtown St. Louis has to be one of the best places to hold a wedding.

Where else can a couple be united in a wedding ceremony held in front of a fountain that celebrates marriage?

Aloe Plaza has one of the most beautiful and acclaimed pieces of artwork in the city--the fountain called "The Meeting of the Waters."

plaza

The fountain, originally named "The Wedding of the Rivers," depicts the union of the Missouri and the Mississippi Rivers, represented by the two central figures. Accompanying the two main figures and forming a wedding procession are 17 water spirits, symbolic of the smaller streams that empty into the two major rivers.

When the fountain was dedicated in 1941, an uproar arose over the nudity of the male figure, reprenting the Mississippi River and the female figure, the Missouri River. In deference to the criticism, the name of the fountain was changed to "The Meeting of the Waters."

Ceremonies can be held on any side of the fountain. The central figures are in the middle of the fountain and are equally visible from both the north and south side.

There is room on the plaza surrounding the fountain to hold a wedding ceremony. The pool that holds the fountain is 200 by 35 feet and the plaza around it is 280 by 75 feet, leaving space for the wedding party and guests.
