Youngsters who want to learn or improve their soccer skills can attend one of six free summer soccer camps offered by the Recreation Division of the City of St. Louis. Soccer camps will start June 18 in six city parks. Any boy or girl entering second through eighth grade can participate in the camps, regardless of their experience playing soccer. Instruction will be given in shooting, passing, dribbling, ball control, trapping, heading and other fundamentals.
The director is Marty Todt, soccer coach at Webster University. Staff includes present and past high school and college players. There will be a ratio of one coach to every 10-12 youngsters. Camps will be held: Session One: June 18 through June 22 at Benton Park, Jefferson and Arsenal, from 1 to 3 p.m. Session Two: June 25 through June 29 at Lindenwood Park, Lindenwood and Jamieson, from 1 to 3 p.m. Session Three: July 9 through July 13 at Sherman Park, Kingshighway and Martin Luther King, from 10 a.m. to noon. Session Four: July 9 through July 13 at Tandy Park, Kennerly at Pendleton, from 1 to 3 p.m. Session Five: July 16 through July 20 at Willmore Park, Hampton and Jamieson, from 1 to 3 p.m. Session Six: July 23 through July 27 at Carondelet Park, (Pavilion on Grand) from 10 a.m. to noon.
Soccer camps are free and include a t-shirt and soccer ball. Youngsters must wear soccer or gym shoes; spikes and shin guards are optional. Space is limited and youngsters must be registered to attend camp.
