Vital Records is a department of the St. Louis City Recorder of Deeds that can provide Certified Birth and Death Certificates dating from 1870 to Present. Also available are statewide birth records dating from 1920 to Present and death records dating from 1980 to Present. You may apply for a Certified Birth or Death Certificate either in person or by mail.

Walk-In Location:

Birth Records -- Recorder of Deeds Office, City Hall Room 127.

Death Records -- Recorder of Deeds Office, City Hall Room 124.

City Hall is at 1200 Market Street, corner of Market Street and Tucker Boulevard.

Numerous MetroBus routes have stops at or near City Hall.
Bi-State's MetroLink train stations at Union Station, Savvis Center and Busch Stadium are within a short walk of City Hall.

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, except public holidays.

Fee Change
Effective August 28, 2004:
Certified Copy - Birth Certificate: $15.00
Certified Copy - Death Certificate: $13.00 first copy, $10.00 for subsequent copies of same record.

Fees and Payment Method:
$15.00 per Birth Certificate. For Death Certificates, cost is $13.00 first copy, $10.00 for subsequent copies of same record.
(Nonrefundable. If you are unsure of the birth or death date or provide an incorrect date, we will conduct a five-year search, two years prior and two years after the date you have provided.).

Fees may be paid by money order or cash. The Recorder of Deeds no longer accepts personal checks.

Money orders should be made payable to "Vital Records" or "Recorder of Deeds."

Copy Delivery: Regular First Class Mail.

If you desire special delivery of the requested Birth or Death Certificate, you must make the arrangements and provide us with the special delivery envelope at your expense.

Photo Identification Required:

When applying for a Certified Birth or Death Certificate in person, please bring your photo identification.

When applying by mail, please send a copy of your photo identification.

1) Name of person whose record you are seeking.
2) Birth Date (month, day, year).
3) Birth Place (hospital or home address).
4) Father's Name (first name, middle name or initial, last name).
5) Mother's Maiden Name (first name, middle name or initial, last name).
6) Your relationship to the person whose record you are seeking.
7) Reason for requesting the Certified Copy.
8) Your Signature and Date (month, day, year).
9) Your photo identification or copy.
10) Fee Payment.
