Very few deeds to real estate contain information on structures.

The Comptroller's Microfilm Archives provides an invaluable resource for persons conducting historical or genealogy research by maintaining microfilm of building permit cards dating 1880-1970.

The cards provide the name of owner at the time of permit, type of work being permitted (construction, addition/improvement, demolition) type of structure, name of architect, estimated cost of project.

Not only is it possible to find out information on your home but perhaps previous structures on the site as well.

If your home was built after 1920, all that you need to locate building permits are the address and City Block Number.

If you desire information on a structure built before 1920 or previous structures on the same site, we suggest that you first research public records to find out the names of the owners between the 1880-1920.

This information will be enormously helpful in your efforts to locate the correct building permit cards.

Many of the older permit cards cite a street and cross street (often street names long since changed) instead of street number and street name. If you have the names of the owners during the period, you simply have to scan through the microfilmed cards looking for the owner names.

For assistance in learning how to research old public records for the names of previous owners, please contact the Recorder of Deeds Archives Department at (314) 589-6796 or stop by Room 126, City Hall.
