The City of St. Louis offers this list of local flooring retailers, which is not inclusive, to help citizens buy recycled. The City does not endorse any of these businesses or services. Space does not allow us to include all stores and products that may be applicable to this list. The variety and availability of these products in stores may change at any time.
When making home improvements, there are many important decisions a homeowner must make. Consider the impact of your purchases. Buying recycled products ensures that the materials you place in the recycling bin continue to have an end use. Approximately 35% of carpet made in the U.S. is made with recycled plastic, most commonly soda bottles and milk jugs. New products for the home are emerging all the time, so this list is by no means exhaustive of your options to purchase recycled content flooring.

The following locations carry a variety of flooring, such as carpet and tile, manufactured using recycled material. Stores located within the City of St. Louis are demarcated by the Arch decal. When shopping, ask questions to learn more about how the floor you buy is made. If using a contractor, specify your preference for recycled content flooring. The company should be able to locate these products for you. Lastly, keep in mind that many of these products require installation by a professional. Be sure to hire an installer when recommended.

About recycling & reclamation of old carpet:
Recycling of carpet is still limited and sometimes only available for commercial projects. Some carpet installers will recycle your carpet and pad before laying new carpet. Ask about the installation process before you decide on a contractor.

About carpet pad:
There are three types of carpet pad or cushion: foam, fiber, and rubber. There are different varieties of each, many of which are made with post-industrial or post-consumer waste. Foam carpet pad can be recycled and others may be recyclable as well. Consult your carpet dealer to help you decide the best carpet cushion for you. Again, specify recycled content in order to close the loop.

About commercial flooring:
This list details products recommended for residential use. A great variety of recycled commercial flooring products are on the market and available through local contractors as well. Additionally, if you purchase their carpet, Dupont Flooring Systems will collect old carpet and recycle it into new products such as carpet padding, auto parts, or plastic tile floors.
